ABOUT

our philosophy

Orange and white cat laying on its back

compassion. intuition. collaboration.

Animals are amazing teachers in grace, patience, love, and how to truly live. They come into our lives like guardian angels to walk alongside us, offering gentle guidance, never judging, always there with a lick or a purr of reassurance and comfort. Yet they do not expect anything besides our love in exchange for their support.

This is our calling: to be fully present for animals when they need us most... and for the people who love them.

We understand how to listen—not just with our five senses, but with our hearts and intuition. We know how to provide healing that integrates both eastern and western medicine. Most of all, we are here to guide, support, and honor the incredible bond between animals and the wonderful people who care so deeply for them.

Founded in 2014 by Lena McCullough, DVM, CVA, ACVCHM, Kingdom of Basil has developed an excellent reputation among local veterinarians for our ability to augment western medicine methods with holistic support for countless cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, birds and other beloved companions.

our herbal shop

carefully selected and combined with love

We believe that excellent quality herbs should be available to every animal. If you are unable to come to Seattle to have a consultation with us, we recommend you work with a holistic vet in your area in order to determine which herbal formula is right for your animal (we do not do remote consultations).

All herbs are human grade. All Chinese herbs come from companies that do extensive testing for pesticides and contaminants. Western herbs are organic when possible and mostly sourced from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Every formula is ground into powder from whole bulk dried herbs. Many herbal blends are made to order and may take 1-3 business days to combine and mail. Some herbs are made ahead of time in batches no larger than 300g. We are happy to make special orders, but please check with us first to make sure we have the herbs you need and to obtain pricing.

All herbs come with instructions that contain the most commonly used dosages.

Shipping is available only within the United States and Canada. Please note: mailing to Canada is expensive and can take 1-2 weeks. Although I have never had it happen, there is a chance that your herbs could be held at customs when shipping to Canada.

We do not mail to other countries because of the complexity of customs issues and because there is a good chance things may not be let into other countries.

our founder

Lena McCullough, DVM, CVA, ACVCHM

Dr. Lena is currently accepting a limited number of new clients as she is mildly disabled.

Western medicine works well for acute illness, but doesn’t always have solutions for chronic problems. This was my inspiration for starting Kingdom of Basil... with the goal of using Chinese medicine and acupuncture as a non-invasive means of healing in conjunction with Western medicine.

In my experience—both as a "western" veterinarian for my first 8 years of practice as well as a holistic veterinarian ever since—these modalities can often provide results, even in debilitated and older animals that Western medicine sometimes cannot treat.  I also believe a holistic approach is key to optimum function throughout an animal's life.

I combine acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition counseling, and energetics to treat cats, dogs, rabbits, and other animals of all ages. These techniques are strengthened by my love, experience, intuition, and knowledge.

Because I see each animal as an individual, I tailor my healing modalities to their unique emotional and physical differences. This approach allows the treatments to reach the root cause of the illness, helping to bring about lasting health.

"Since I was a young child, I have always had a strong love and connection with animals. I believe that animals have a natural ability to heal, but sometimes need help doing so. I enjoy being able to help animals regain their health and well being. My passion is helping animals be happy throughout their different life stages and changing health."
